Gadget Girl – Visual Aid Devices

This vlog is about some of the visual devices that can be used to help you in the academic world. I created this video to encourage those that I have met that were recently diagnosed with Stargardt’s and feeling discouraged about going to or finishing school. I was discouraged when I couldn’t begin dental school and I had doubts that I could find a career that I’d love and be comfortable in. Don’t let your emotions get the best of you. The fact is: THERE ARE NO LIMITS TO WHAT YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH!

I want to clarify what I meant in the video when I said “I don’t recommend having a dream for yourself that requires you to operate heavy machinery or work on others”. Sure you can work on others but dentistry, in particular, is heavily reliant on visual acuity. When dealing with the teeth and all of its small grooves, there isn’t much contrast for us with Stargardt’s to see optimally. You don’t want to put yourself or another person in danger. With that being said, there are many things you can do that you may not have thought possible. Blind MasterChef winner Christine Ha is a wonderful example and a great inspiration! Check her out: Christina Ha video

My biggest advice is to make an appointment with a low vision specialist. I made the mistake of going through undergraduate school without visual aid. You do not have to journey alone. You might be surprised at what you can see once you get a device that works for you.

If you live in New York, like me, you should go to the Lighthouse Guild on 59th street between Park and Lexington Avenue. I love The Lighthouse! The doctors are very compassionate and knowledgeable. I’ve met wonderful, loving people throughout the building. They have countless services for us (mobility assessments, low vision cooking classes, typing classes, support groups and more). I received all of the devices mentioned in the video from the Lighthouse through the New York State Commission for the Blind. They are teaching me so much and I’m fully charged and ready to ROAR like Katy Perry!

Comment way down there below and tell me what your favorite devices are! Or talk about the one I’m using. Are there any services provided by your college that you would recommend? Thanks for sharing and being so awesome!

Here's an affordable portable CCTV I found on amazon to get you started on your search.
